The opportunity to inspire people is one of the best things life can give you. For me, it’s been through ways like songwriting and blogging, other times its been through a ton of direct chats with people, whether it’s through a little white box on Facebook or sitting outside with someone at a 7/11 at 4:30 AM. And as I’ve grown older, inspiring people and giving some validity to this crazy journey we call life has been something that’s made me proud. It’s also something I’ve really underestimated when I kept trying to compare myself to other people.
Live your work instead of living to level it.
It’s too often we get concerned with what we’re doing in this world compared to other people, or compared to what we see in popular culture or otherwise. We get so caught up comparing ourselves that we often tend to lose our own goals and morals just to keep ourselves to the standards of other people who don’t even realize it. Too many people in this world try to achieve to impress other people, often forgetting that what truly matters is joy. Granted, a lot our professional life is built trying impress people above us, but what truly matters is that you achieve something at the end of the day that gives you purpose, whether that affects a million people or two people.
We tend to compare ourselves to the standards of other people who don't even realize it.
Think about the last time you accomplished something that didn’t have to do with pleasing anyone else. Some of the best accomplishments in life come when we rebel against trying to compare ourselves to everyone and just work the most at what makes us the happiest. We have to love ourselves before we can love doing anything else, and the strong advantage we have of being individiuals actually makes our collective efforts a lot better. We get so deep into imagining ourselves and everyone we know on this proverbial ladder, trying to figure out who’s making the most progress. In reality, the only comparison that actually matters is how much better we are as a person than we were yesterday.
Love yourself, that's how you make great things happen.
So no matter what you’re doing today, be it working a 9 to 5 job or putting your time into a textbook, feel good about yourself. Look to an opportunity to improve yourself as a person, do something that makes you happy. At the end of our lives, so many people fear being in an obituary column with nothing to mention next to their name. We should never worry, because as long as we’re happy and wake up every single morning loving every moment we breathe, we’ll be okay. Do great things today that people can’t put in words. Love the moment as much as you can. Our time is too limited to be worrying about anything, let alone how we’re doing compared to the next person.
